How food affects your metabolism
Explore six food groups and see how they contribute to metabolism and physiological regulation.
Vegetables
Vegetables provide fiber, minerals and plant compounds involved in antioxidant defence, intestinal function and cellular signalling. A varied intake increases nutrient density and provides substrates that can support the gut microbiota and metabolic health.
Fruits
Fruits provide water, fiber, polyphenols, potassium and naturally occurring sugars. The metabolic response varies with portion size, the individual’s metabolic context and the composition of the meal.
Proteins
Protein provides amino acids needed for tissue maintenance and repair, enzyme and neurotransmitter synthesis, immune function and the maintenance of muscle and connective tissue. Adequate protein intake supports the body’s ongoing processes of maintenance and renewal.
Healthy Fats
Dietary fats are components of cell membranes and contribute to nervous system function, hormone synthesis and the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins. Their physiological effects vary with fatty-acid profile, food source, processing and the overall dietary pattern.
Fermented Foods
Some fermented foods can contribute live microorganisms and compounds produced during fermentation. Their effects depend on individual tolerance, the type of fermentation and the overall diet. Not all fermented foods contain live microorganisms or qualify as probiotics.
Whole Grains
Whole grains provide fiber, B vitamins, magnesium and complex carbohydrates. They can support satiety and bowel regularity. The glycaemic response varies with the type of grain, degree of processing, cooking method, portion size and meal composition.
