Story set during the Spanish Civil War
This text is part of a narrative series on the human response in contexts of war, hunger and threat. Through a scene set in Girona in 1938, it explores how body and mind react when survival is no longer an abstract idea, but an immediate necessity.
Girona, 1938
I walk through the thick fog
of Girona's streets.
It is cold.
My fingers turn white.
It has been two days
since I last ate.
I climb Carrer de la Força,
shattered by Saturday's bombings.
My legs tremble.
My head begins to fade.
The morning light is reflected
on the houses of the Jewish quarter.
The dust from the rubble
sticks to my throat.
I cannot breathe.
I cannot stop coughing.
Something breaks
beneath my foot.
I stop dead.
My heart beats so hard
I think everyone can hear it.
Silence.
Loneliness absorbs me quickly.
I look at the Salvat house.
The front wall
is no longer there.
I see the clock resting
on the dining-room cabinet.
It says ten to twelve.
When did all this happen?
I need to find food
quickly.
The children.
Dear God,
the children!
For a moment,
I hold the empty basket
with both hands.
I feel the weight of tears
about to fall.
I walk close to the wall.
The stone is cold
and damp.
I hold on to it
so I do not fall.
Suddenly,
an unbearable smell
makes me turn my head.
I cannot take it anymore.
I start running.
I am afraid.
Very afraid.
My legs are failing,
but I have to keep going.
The children are waiting for me.
They are hungry.
So am I.

Relat de la Guerra Civil Espanyola

Girona, 1938
Camino per la boira densa
dels carrers de Girona.
Fa fred.
Els meus dits es tornen blancs.
Ja fa dos dies
que no menjo.
Pujo pel Carrer de la Força,
destrossat pels bombardejos de dissabte.
Em tremolen les cames.
Se m'esvaeix el cap.
La llum del matí es reflecteix
sobre les cases del barri jueu.
La pols de les runes
se m'enganxa a la gola.
Em falta aire.
No puc parar de tossir.
Alguna cosa es trenca
sota el meu peu.
M'aturo de cop.
El meu cor batega tan fort
que penso que tothom el pot sentir.
Silenci.
La solitud m'absorbeix ràpidament.
Miro la casa dels Salvat.
La paret del davant
ja no hi és.
Veig el rellotge recolzat
sobre el moble del menjador.
Marca les dotze menys deu.
Quan va passar tot això?
Necessito trobar menjar
ràpidament.
Els nens.
Déu meu,
els nens!
Sostinc un moment
el cistell buit
amb les dues mans.
Noto el pes de les llàgrimes
a punt de sortir.
Camino arran de la paret.
La pedra és freda
i humida.
M'hi aguanto amb la mà
per no caure.
De cop,
una olor insuportable
em fa girar el cap.
No ho puc aguantar més!
Començo a córrer.
Tinc por.
Molta por.
Les cames em fallen,
però he de continuar.
Els nens m'esperen.
Tenen gana.

Girona, 1938
Camino entre la niebla densa
de las calles de Girona.
Hace frío.
Mis dedos se vuelven blancos.
Hace ya dos días
que no como.
Subo por la calle de la Força,
destrozada por los bombardeos del sábado.
Me tiemblan las piernas.
La cabeza se me desvanece.
La luz de la mañana se refleja
sobre las casas del barrio judío.
El polvo de los escombros
se me pega a la garganta.
Me falta el aire.
No puedo dejar de toser.
Algo se rompe
bajo mi pie.
Me detengo de golpe.
El corazón me late tan fuerte
que pienso que todos pueden oírlo.
Silencio.
La soledad me absorbe rápidamente.
Miro la casa de los Salvat.
La pared delantera
ya no está.
Veo el reloj apoyado
sobre el mueble del comedor.
Marca las doce menos diez.
¿Cuándo pasó todo esto?
Necesito encontrar comida
rápidamente.
Los niños.
¡Dios mío,
los niños!
Sostengo un momento
el cesto vacío
con las dos manos.
Noto el peso de las lágrimas
a punto de salir.
Camino pegada a la pared.
La piedra está fría
y húmeda.
Me apoyo en ella con la mano
para no caer.
De pronto,
un olor insoportable
me hace girar la cabeza.
¡No puedo aguantar más!
Empiezo a correr.
Tengo miedo.
Mucho miedo.
Las piernas me fallan,
pero tengo que continuar.
Los niños me esperan.
Tienen hambre.

Meine Beine zittern.
Mir wird schwindlig.
Das Morgenlicht spiegelt sich
auf den Häusern des jüdischen Viertels.
Der Staub der Trümmer
klebt mir im Hals.
Ich bekomme keine Luft.
Ich kann nicht aufhören zu husten.
Etwas zerbricht
unter meinem Fuß.
Ich bleibe abrupt stehen.
Mein Herz schlägt so laut,
dass ich glaube, alle können es hören.
Stille.
Die Einsamkeit verschlingt mich rasch.
Ich sehe das Haus der Salvats.
Die vordere Wand
ist nicht mehr da.
Ich sehe die Uhr,
angelehnt an das Möbelstück im Esszimmer.
Sie zeigt zehn vor zwölf.
Wann ist all das geschehen?
Ich muss schnell
etwas zu essen finden.
Die Kinder.
Mein Gott,
Meine Beine versagen,
aber ich muss weiter.
Die Kinder warten auf mich.
Sie haben Hunger.
Ich auch.
During the Spanish Civil War, Girona suffered aerial bombings. The old quarter, due to its dense and vulnerable structure, was severely affected.
On January 29, 1938, the Italian aviation allied with the Francoist side bombed the city, causing destruction of homes and civilian victims.
The population lived under a continuous threat, with fear, losses, evictions, and scarcity. These experiences left a deep imprint on the life and memory of its inhabitants.
